THEME: “FOR JUSTICE, I WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE”

The 2023 Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Community Celebration will be held virtually and in-person on Monday, January 16, 2023, 1:00 p.m., at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

This is our 34th year and we recognize and appreciate your faithfulness and support throughout the years. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Choir Ensemble, will perform under the direction of Brother William “Skip” Carter, Jr.

Keynote Speaker: Kent County Commissioner, representing District 12 Wyoming/Kentwood in Kent County, Michigan. Servant leader, Monica Sparks proudly serves as Kent County Commissioner. As an auxiliary member of the American Legion, D.W. Cassard Post 208, Monica is serving her second term on the Kent County Board of Commissioners and you can trust that she will continue to be a fierce advocate, protecting the services of honorable military veterans, servicemen and women in Kent County.

Dinner will be served after this service. We are continuing to practice social distancing and following the CDC guidelines. Wearing mask or face covering is recommended but is not a requirement.

COMMISSIONER MONICA SPARKS

Monica Sparks is the founder of Community of Hearts, a nonprofit that raises mental health awareness and helps people locate resources they need. She’s also serving her second term on the Kent County Board of Commissioners representing District 12 Wyoming/Kentwood, in Kent County, Michigan. She is a licensed real estate broker, board president of National Heritage Academies Vista, a member of the Kent County Early Childhood Millage Review Board and appointed to the Kent County Board of Commissioners Finance Committee. Monica also serves at the state and national level on the Michigan Association of Counties Agriculture and Tourism, and environmental committee as well as the National Association of Counties Community Economic and Workforce Development Steering Committee. Monica owns several businesses, including Urban Sparks Realty, and Body Sculpt Better Body Bar & Spa. And she’s a former planning commissioner for the city of Kentwood, certified business mentor with SCORE, and advocate for senior citizens and military veterans. As a Whole Life advocate, Monica Sparks is also the first African American woman President of the national organization, Democrats For Life. She was selected by CORP Magazine as the Diversity Business Leader of the Year and as one of the ’50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan’ by the Grand Rapids Business Journal. She is married to Lonnie Polk, Jr. who works as a Laser Operations Manager at a local manufacturing company and they have two sons, Todd, and Tyler.
